Asper was selected by UNOPS to conduct a scoping study to inform the Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT) on the feasibility of creating a sustainable bamboo supply chain in Kachin and/or Kayin States that could potentially catalyze the creation of a value chain that is based upon the sourcing of product from both natural sources and agroforestry based plantations that would provide livelihood opportunities for IDPs and returnees.
The Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT) is a multi-donor fund set up in 2009. LIFT aims to strengthen the resilience and sustainable livelihoods of poor households by helping people to reach their full economic potential. This is achieved through increasing incomes, improving the nutrition of women and children, and decreasing vulnerabilities to shocks, stresses and adverse trends.
Specifically, this scoping study will enable the following:
- Create a decision pathway for the establishment of a sustainable bamboo supply chain that would support a private sector driven bamboo value chain
- Inform the design of a plan to attract private and impact investors in Bago if the scoping study reveals that the availability of commercial bamboo stocks can support the creation of more than one factory
- Create a legacy for the public sector to acquire an understanding of state of the art technology to assess bamboo resources
- Engage with Government on land rights use and Community Forest User Groups mechanism using a variety of approach
- Explore the possibilities of developing long-term livelihoods strategies that can be part of a wider landscape management plan in conflict affected states.
